I have begun my eleventh year as a Montessori teacher at Crossroads Elementary School. The journey has been exciting. I started my teaching career as a traditional elementary teacher with the Department of Defense Schools in Scotland and in West Germany. Upon completion of that phase of my career, I moved to Virginia and taught in the Fairfax County Public Schools. My husband and I moved to Minnesota in 1991 and I have been associated with the Saint Paul Public Schools since that time.
My degrees are a Bachelor Degree in Education from the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland; a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction for Gifted and Talented from the University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon; and a Montessori Teaching certificate from the College of Saint Catherine, in Saint Paul, Minnesota. My journey to Crossroads has been one step at a time on the bridge of life.
During the beginning of the school year, the E1 students are introduced to the Great Lessons, a Montesssori cornerstone. Last week, the children were told the Story of the Universe. The story has sparked their interest and they are researching volcanoes, planets, and constellations. The upcoming Great Lessons will include the Story of Life, the Story of Time, the Story of Language, and the Story of Numbers. After each story is told, the children will have an opportunity to perform relevant research projects.
