Physical Education

Welcome back students and families.

This year the Physical Education (PE) will be adopting the Crossroads expectations as our classroom rules.  The expectations include: Respect (for self, others, teachers and equipment), responsibility (for oneself, learning and behavior) and cooperation (working with all at Crossroads).

Each student in K-6 will be coming to the gym for movement, learning and fun.  Please have appropriate shoes for your child. An appropriate shoe for the gym will be an athletic shoe that will stay on one's feet, they must tie or velcro, and have non-marking soles.  Black soled shoes tend to mark up the floor.  Thank you for making your child's experience in the gym a fun one and safe one.

SPPS' have adopted a federal wellness policy that will focus on student's nutrition health and physical activity.  Your child's PE class will meet or exceed the National Standards, students shall demonstrate an understanding of skills and techniques to achieve and maintain life-long personal fitness,  PE will be available to all students regardless of behavioral or academic status, schools will refrain from using exercise as a consequence for negative behavior, schools will work to develop physical activity opportunities before, during and after school, students will participate in frequent, active recess, and will maintain safe and developmentally appropriate fitness equipment and activity areas. For more information on the wellness policy, go to www.studentwellness.spps.org

Jump Rope For Heart 2012

We are thrilled to share our school is supporting the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope For Heart program!

When your child participates in Jump Rope For Heart he/she:

·       Learns about the importance of the heart – how it works, and how to take care of it: Through classroom exercises and educational information provided by the American Heart Association.

·       Helps kids with special hearts: Our safe online tool makes it easy for your child to set-up a web page and send emails to invite friends and family to support their fundraising efforts and to share life-saving information.

·       Feels good for making a difference in people’s lives!  Funds raised support American Heart Association research and education initiatives that save lives in our community.  Congenital heart defects are the most common cause of infant death from birth defects.  Many children are alive today because of treatments not available even 10 years ago. Funded research and advancements have changed and saved their lives!

Physical Education Standards

Each academic area of study has their own standards. This includes Physical Education (PE). St. Paul schools has 6 standards to help guide teaching and let you know what your child is learning in PE class.

Standard 1. Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. For example: galloping, skipping, jumping, running, throwing, kicking and catching.

Standard 2. Demonstrates an understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.  For example: offense and defense strategies.

Standard 3. Participates regularly in physical activity.  This includes at home as well as here at school

Standard 4.  Achieves and maintains a health enhancing level of physical fitness.

Standard 5.  Exhibits safe, responsible behavior that respects self and others, while accepting diversity in physical activity settings.  This is my main focus.  We teach social and personal behaviors through sport, exercise and game activities.

Standard 6.   Understands the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and/or social interaction.

I will strive to meet or exceed these standards when it comes to teaching your child what he/she needs to live a healthy, active life.
