Shape Gator
Shape Gator
OBJECTIVES:
Students will become familiar with the characteristics of specific shapes: rectangle, triangle, ellipse, circle and diamond.
Students learn to use a hole punch.
Students learn to use paper fasteners/brads to attach moving parts.
ART MATERIALS:
9" x 12" green construction paper
Black construction paper
8 1/2" x 11" copier paper
pencil
scissor
glue sticks
paper fasteners/brads (6 for each student)
hole punch
PREPARATION:
Cut Paper
Body 9" x 12" green paper --
Head and Legs 6" x 9" green paper (2 each student) -- cut 9" x 12" paper in half
Tails 6" x 3" paper (shared by two students) -- cut 6" x 9" paper in half
Teeth 4 1/4" x 8 1/2" white copier paper -- cut copier paper into quarter strips
Eye 1" x 1" black square
MOTIVATION:
Ask students to name a shape that has one side (circle).
Ask students to name a shape that has three sides (triangle).
Ask students to name two shapes that have four sides (square, rectangle and diamond). Compare and contrast the three shapes.
Ask students to name a second shape that has one side (ellipse). Compare and contrast an ellipse with a circle.
PROJECT:
Beginning with a RECTANGLE, of 6" x 9" green construction paper. Draw a DIAGONAL line from one corner to the OPPOSIT corner. Ask students how many shapes are made if they cut on the DIAGONAL line (two triangles).
Match up the two TRIANGLES. Teacher punches holes in the largest angle that is not a right angle.
Students make a DIAMOND (touching the two long sides of the two TRIANGLES). Lining up the the holes make a hinge joint with the paper fastener.
4 1/4" x 8 1/2" white RECTANGLE, make a pencil mark at both the top and bottom centers of the strip. Beginning at one end draw a ZIG-ZAG line down the center of the paper and ending at the second dot. Note: Mistakes are okay. Only draw on one side of the paper. Also, encourage students to draw large zig-zags, small zig-zags are difficult and time consuming for Kindergarteners to cut. If students cut more than two pieces, glue all pieces on to the jaw.
Glue the FLAT side of the teeth. Attach teeth to the LONGEST side of the green TRIANGLES.
DAY TWO:
Making an Ellipse (body)
Demonstrate: start with a 9" x 12" green RECTANGLE, round off the corners to transform the shape into an ELLIPSE. Note: students made circles from squares when making wheels for their pattern trains.
Using A Hole Punch:
Demonstrate using a hole punch by pushing the paper into the punch until is hits the back of the punch. Point out where to insert the paper into the punch.
Punch four holes at least one hand a part at the bottom of the ELLIPSE.
Making Legs:
6" x 9" green paper draw a line in the middle of the paper. Draw two more lines in the centers of each side. Count the number of lines with students. Ask student if there are three lines how many legs will be cut out? (four legs). Punch a hole at one end of each of the legs.
Attaching Legs:
put brad through the body hole with "legs" of fastener facing upward. Place the leg hole through the brad. Bend the longest "leg" of the fastener at a 90 degree angle. Bend the second "leg." "Legs" and corners should all be on one side of the paper. And "dots" aka heads of the fasteners on the otherside. Finish attaching the remaining three animal legs.
Puch a hole for the head. Use the same brad that fastens the jaw triangles to attach the head.
Making a Tail:
Selecting a Partner:
Ask: "Will you be my partner please?" Response: "Yes, and thank you for asking."
Partners will share a piece of 3" x 6" paper for making a tail. One partner draws the diagonal line. The second partner cuts the diagonal line with scissors. Individuals punch the tail hole on the triangle and on the body. Using a brad, attach the tail to the body.
Making an Eye:
Cut the four corners off of a 1" x 1" black square to make a circle.
Punch a white circle with the hole punch and glue it to the center of the black circle.
Glue the black circle to the head of the animal on the side of the animal that has the fastener heads or "dots."
Assessment:
Was the student able to attach the body parts using a hole punch and paper fasteners?
Did student align all the fasteners correctly? ("legs with corners" and "dots")
Can the student name all the shapes made and the original shapes?
